NewPage Corp. plans to temporarily lay off 250 paper workers in Rumford over the holidays, the result of a drop in demand and a stockpiling of inventory.
Tony Lyons, a local spokesman for Miamisburg, Ohio-based NewPage Corp., told the Sun Journal that roughly 250 mill employees will be idled to reduce the company’s amount of specialty paper by 40,000 tons. The layoffs are expected to affect people in the mill’s yard, as well as those who work the No. 15 paper machine.
The temporary shutdown begins Dec. 8 and is scheduled to end in early January, Lyons told the paper.
