8 Waldo County nonprofits get $40K in Maine Community Foundation grants

Eight Waldo County nonprofits have been awarded $40,492 in grants from the Maine Community Foundation to continue their work in education, the arts and other areas.

The awards were announced on Wednesday.

Recipients include Waldo County Woodshed, a volunteer-run group that works to provide free firewood for households in need, and the Volunteer Regional Food Pantry.

Grants are distributed through the foundation’s Waldo County Fund, and the next grant proposal deadline is Feb. 15, 2020. Applications, guidelines and a list of recent grants are all available online.

Aging Well in Waldo County, to mobilize county libraries, municipal government, and local organizations to complete a campaign to make municipalities age-friendly places to live: $3,000

Belfast Maskers, to create a circus arts program in Belfast: $3,500

Friends of Sears Island, to increase self-guided education opportunities on Sears Island through the installation of new interpretive and navigational signs and a new library backpack lending program: $4,735

RetreeUS, to cultivate thriving orchards at five Waldo County schools and provide orchard-based learning opportunities that will educate the next generation about healthy food system contributors: $9,000

RSU 71, to retrofit the greenhouse/outdoor classroom to be heated year-round with 100% renewable energy: $6,407

Volunteer Regional Food Pantry, to improve long-term financial and operational security by developing a community and donor communications plan, calendar and materials: $2,350

Waldo County Woodshed, to build a countywide system to reliably provide emergency supplemental firewood to households unable to keep adequately warm by their own means: $8,000

Waterfall Arts, to expand accessible community arts programs to include film, documentary, and storytelling offerings for Waldo County residents: $3,500
