Plans by Acadia Federal Credit Union to build full-service branches in Brewer and Presque Isle mark a significant expansion in Penobscot and Aroostook counties.
Headquartered in the Aroostook County town of Fort Kent, Acadia broke ground on construction in recent weeks.
The Brewer branch will be at 618 Wilson St., the former site of Lee Credit Now., while the Presque Isle location will be at 725 Main St. where Bonanza Steakhouse used to be.
The facilities will offer enhanced accessibility and technology, according to a news release.
“Presque Isle and Brewer aren’t just new locations — they’re a continuation of our promise to show up where it matters,” said Joey Cannan, Acadia’s president and CEO.
Bangor branch to close
Established in 1963, Acadia is the combination of seven smaller community credit unions and serves Aroostook, Penobscot, Hancock, Washington and Piscataquis counties. It currently has eight branches with over 17,000 members and assets exceeding $387 million.
Among the eight current branches is one at 713 Broadway in Bangor, which Acadia opened in 2020.
The Bangor branch will be closed once the Brewer location is completed and the Bangor employees will be relocated to Brewer.
The Brewer location is positioned to accommodate the growing number of members who live and work in that city.
The branches are expected to open in February 2026.
Acadia is ranked No. 12 among the largest Maine-based credit unions in the 2025 Mainebiz Book of Lists. Rankings were based on total assets as of Sept. 30, 2024.
