Last year the only national park in the state reached its highest visitation total in 20 years, as an estimated 2.81 million park-goers visited Acadia National Park.
It’s a jump from the 2.5 million visitors that Acadia brought in during 2014 — which itself had been the highest visitation number since 1999, according to The Bangor Daily News.
The last time Acadia had an annual estimate of at least 2.9 million visits was in 1995, when 2.84 million came to the park.
Park officials themselves are unsure about a possible explanation for the increase in visitors to the National Park.
“It was definitely a busy year,” Charlie Jacobi, a natural resource specialist for the park, told the BDN.
