A South Portland reuse planning committee has recommended repurposing a public works complex, on six acres between O’Neil and Pitt streets, for affordable housing.
The Portland Press Herald reported the city has little undeveloped residential land but a high demand for affordable housing.
“There’s a strong desire to see affordability built into the project,” Linden Thigpen, a neighborhood representative on the reuse committee, told the PPH. Thigpen said some residents were concerned the city would sell it for “big bucks” to a developer who might build a few high-priced homes.
Several developers have shown interest in the site.
