The Sarah Mildred Long Bridge on Route 1-A that connects Kittery and Portsmouth, N.H., over the Piscataqua River, won’t reopen to vehicle traffic following a gear failure over the weekend.
“Extensive repairs, upward of $1 million worth of repairs, would have been needed to get this back operable,” Maine Department of Transportation spokesman Ted Talbot told the Maine Public Broadcasting Network. “And, even then, it wouldn’t be necessarily guaranteed to operate smoothly and efficiently, like we need to have it.”
The New Hampshire Union Leader reported that the bridge was already scheduled to be closed to traffic on Nov.1 for the construction of a bridge to replace the 76-year-old Sarah Mildred Long Bridge. That new bridge is expected to open in September 2017.
