American Steel & Aluminum broke ground on a 12,000-square-foot addition to its Saco facility.
The Spring Hill Road property already totals close to 51,000 square feet, and serves as both an inventory hub for the company’s five other locations and a heavy-plate processing facility.
Lajoie Brothers Construction, which is based in Augusta, is managing the Saco expansion.
American Steel manufactures metal products and provides processing services to a range of industries, including shipbuilding and defense, data centers and battery storage.
In addition to Saco, the company operates facilities in South Portland and West Bath, as well as Auburn, Mass.; Liverpool, N.Y.; and Fremont, N.H.
American Steel purchased the Saco site in 2023.
Quebec-based Nova Steel, is American Steel's parent company, has 20 plants across North America, Mexico and Canada.
“We’ve become an advanced manufacturing facility here. We’re buying specialized equipment, we’re adding value, we’re contributing to national security. These are great jobs and this is just the start," Scott Jones, president and CEO of Nova Steel, said at the recent groundbreaking in Saco.
American Steel President Sam Blatchford added that the expansion would allow for the creation of 30 new jobs, for a total of 160 employees in Maine. The facility’s cutting capacity will double.
The addition will also allow for increased capacity and capability to support General Dynamics's Groton, Conn.-based Electric Boat business unit, which builds, repairs and modernizes nuclear submarines.
The Saco expansion is expected to be finished by February 2027.
