Ancorum Credit Union cut the ribbon on its newest branch, inside a Walmart store at 1573 Main St. in Palmyra.
It’s the Bath-based credit union’s 16th branch. Palmyra, which is in Somerset County, has a population of just over 1,900, according to the U.S. Census.
"We're excited to officially become part of the Palmyra community and to bring our commitment to helping members achieve financial well-being to even more Mainers," said Julie Marquis, Ancorum’s president and CEO.
The credit union started in 1956 as Bath Iron Works Federal Credit Union. It later became Five County Credit Union and was rebranded last year as Ancorum.
The name Ancorum blends the words "anchor," a nod to the credit union’s beginnings at shipbuilder Bath Iron Works, and "quorum," which represents a group or the community.
The credit union ranks No. 11 in the 2026 Mainebiz Book of Lists, based on assets as of Sept. 30, 2025. Ancorum is owned by more than 30,000 members across a dozen Maine counties. It has around $400 million in assets and 144 employees.
Three additional employees are scheduled to start today at the Palmyra branch, which will bring its employee count to four. Two more employees are scheduled to start Sept. 10.
Growth opportunities
“We continue to see opportunities for growth through new-member acquisition, deeper member relationships and increased awareness of our Ancorum Credit Union brand,” Kelly Fairfield, Ancorum’s vice president of marketing, told Mainebiz.
In addition to its main office in Bath, Ancorum has locations in Auburn, Augusta, Bowdoinham, Brunswick, Lewiston, Lisbon, Portland, Rockland, Scarborough, Skowhegan, Topsham, Waterville, Windham, Yarmouth and now Palmyra.
Ancorum worked with the Walmart team on the design and build of the Palmyra branch. Local businesses provided key components of the project, including drywall, network infrastructure, electrical, flooring, glass and windows, equipment, IT and technology installation.
Its location inside a Wal-Mart provides convenient access to financial services where people already shop and conduct everyday business, Fairfield said.
“The Palmyra branch is particularly important because it gives Ancorum Credit Union a physical presence in an area that is strategically important to our expanded 12-county footprint,” she said. “It helps us build relationships with residents and local businesses in the region while expanding our presence in central Maine.
