Aroostook County has been a leader in Christmas tree sales, not just for Maine, but the entire Northeast, according to federal data released earlier this year.
The Bangor Daily News reported that Aroostook led the region, which includes Pennsylvania and New Jersey, in 2012 with an estimated $1.3 million in Christmas tree sales. The data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Census of Agriculture shows that Aroostook represented 25% of Maine’s $3.6 million in 2012 Christmas tree sales.
The newspaper said while sales figures from previous years aren’t available, census data shows that Christmas tree harvesting has been increasing in Aroostook and other counties.
