The longtime Vinalhaven home and studio of the late artist Robert Indiana is on the market.
The property, which is just over 7,000 square feet, is listed for $1.4 million, by Portland-based Legacy Properties Sotheby’s International Realty.
The 12-room building is located in the central business district, at 46 Main St., next to the Vinalhaven Post Office.
It dates to 1884 and was built in Second Empire Victorian style, according to the listing. It has water views toward Vinalhaven Harbor and, from the back, Carver’s Pond.
Images posted in the listing show the space mostly cleaned out from the days when Indiana lived there. Photos show several remaining prints from his days in the building. Overall, the space looks raw, with still intact historic details and with spots that may need significant restoration work.
Indiana, who is often associated with Pop art and his famous LOVE sculpture, lived there for four decades, until his death in 2018. The site is owned by the nonprofit Star of Hope Foundation.
In his will, Indiana had stipulated that the site become a museum, but the Star of Hope Foundation contends that its primary mission is to support art and artists, not manage property, the New York Times reported.
Vinalhaven, with a year-round population of 1,200, is in Penobscot Bay, accessible by a ferry from Rockland.
