Augusta airport expects passenger increase

The Augusta State Airport expects its passenger numbers to double now that a new contract has been signed with a company to offer regional air service between the airport and Boston.

The federal Department of Transportation last week approved a new two-year contract with Colgan Air to provide subsidized commercial air service from Augusta and Bar Harbor to Boston, according to the Kennebec Journal. The company, a regional carrier based in Virginia, will receive roughly $4.2 million a year in subsidies to offer the service.

The company plans to upgrade to larger, 34-seat planes and offer 19 flights a week from Augusta to Boston’s Logan Airport. The airport hopes to see its annual passenger numbers double from 5,000 to 10,000, according to the paper.
