Augusta lawyer receives French honor

Severin Beliveau, an Augusta lawyer and Franco-American activist, yesterday received the French Legion of Honor in a ceremony in Augusta.

Beliveau received the honor, the highest in France, because of his service to the people of France, according to a press release from Gov. John Baldacci's office. The ceremony in Augusta was attended by Baldacci, the French ambassador to the United States and the Consul General of France in Boston.

Beliveau served for 16 years as the honorary consul for France in Maine, organized a 2005 state trade mission to France and is president of the Forum Francophone des Affairs, a global alliance of French-speaking nations working for economic development.
