The city of Augusta is partnering with the Roux Institute at Northeastern University to launch Venture Forward Augusta, a cohort-based program designed to support entrepreneurs, small business owners and local business leaders.
“There has been tremendous interest and enthusiasm for the Roux Institute across Maine, and we’re excited to bring their Venture Forward program to Augusta to support and grow our local business community,” said Keith Luke, Augusta’s economic development director.

Attract, support small businesses
The eight-week business growth initiative aims to help participants scale operations, explore innovative marketing strategies and build long-term sustainability through emerging technologies, hands-on workshops and mentorship.

“One of our council goals is to increase and broaden the tax base by becoming more attractive to developers and entrepreneurs, advancing specific projects, as well as attracting, retaining and supporting small businesses,” said Jared Mills, Augusta’s city manager. “This program is a strong example of how we can put that goal into action.”
Venture Forward is designed to equip entrepreneurs with tools, mentorship and guidance, while also helping strengthen local economies and deepen connections across Maine’s small business and innovation ecosystem, said Chris Torina, Roux’s director of entrepreneurship.

Growth strategies
Weekly, in-person workshops hosted at a local community venue provide tools tailored to the needs of small business owners. The program also includes mentorship pairings and hands-on support from teams specializing in design, marketing and business analysis.
Services might include website updates, search engine optimization and social media audits, financial modeling and market research.
“The growth of existing businesses in Augusta strengthens the city’s economic foundation, creating jobs, expanding opportunity and building a more vibrant business community,” said Raegan LaRochelle, executive director of the Augusta Board of Trade.
The program will conclude with a community showcase, where participants will present their growth strategies to mentors, partners and local leaders.
Applications for Venture Forward Augusta open May 19 and will be accepted through June 16. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis, with space for up to 12 businesses.
The program will run from July 14 through Sept. 1. For more information or to apply, visit Venture Forward on the website of the Roux Institute or the city of Augusta.
