Avesta Housing

Mission Statement

Avesta Housing is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to improve lives and strengthen communities by promoting and providing quality affordable homes for people in need.

Service locations

Maine and New Hampshire

A large and growing body of research on housing security shows that stable affordable housing has a positive impact on individuals, families and communities. We have successfully developed, provided and promoted safe, quality, affordable homes for more than 50 years. Our leadership and staff have the requisite technical and professional skills coupled with a passionate commitment to make lasting change for the individuals, families and communities we serve.

In the past two years, we have:

  • Celebrated our 50th anniversary
  • Provided safe, affordable, quality homes to 4,400 people every day
  • Developed and/or rehabilitated more than 400 affordable homes
  • Collaborated with 100+ community organizations to provide Avesta residents with support services such as food pantries and community meals, English Language Learning classes, vaccine clinics, legal support and employment services

2024 Goals

  • Reduce the current affordable housing shortfall in Maine by expanding and accelerating the development of new affordable properties with a focus on workforce, rural and site-based Housing First housing
  • Improve access to support services for Avesta residents who are most in need, helping them achieve housing stability
  • Invest in renewable energy and sustainable approaches to promote long-term preservation and affordability, and to help reduce residents’ housing cost burden
  • Expand our advocacy work to create systemic and lasting impact on the availability of affordable housing

Giving Opportunities

Over the past four years, Avesta has invested more than $5.5 million in philanthropic donations from individuals, corporations and foundations to double our production of affordable housing and greatly expand our ability to connect residents with essential support services. We invite everyone in the community to play a role in tackling the affordable housing crisis in Maine through their financial support.

Cash/Stock Donations of any size are greatly appreciated and help to fund our work.

Gifts of Property – Donations of land and/or buildings help Avesta create more affordable housing that meets the community’s needs.
