Portland-based nonprofit Avesta Housing has hired John Egan as its director of development, replacing Patrick Hess, who has been promoted to vice president of real estate.
Egan will lead Avesta’s real estate development team in creating and preserving affordable rental housing in Maine and New Hampshire.
He comes to the position with nearly four decades of community development experience in Maine and Alaska as a developer, lender, investor and owner.
Prior to joining Avesta, Egan spent five years at the Brunswick-based Genesis Community Loan Fund, where he provided technical guidance and facilitation on the development process as well as the preservation of rural affordable rental properties. Also in Brunswick, Egan spent two decades at Coastal Enterprises Inc., including a role as chief investment officer.
“I am confident that John’s deep real estate development experience, combined with his clear commitment to Avesta’s mission, will result in our ability to expand our housing development pipeline and help meet the acute housing shortage in northern New England,” said Jennifer Hawkins, president and CEO of Avesta Housing.
VP of real estate
After nine years with the organization, Hess was promoted last year to vice president of real estate for Avesta, a newly created position.
Avesta Housing manages roughly 100 affordable properties in Maine and New Hampshire, more than 3,000 apartments and two assisted living facilities. An additional 1,100 homes are in the development pipeline.
