Avesta Housing, the Portland-based nonprofit developer of affordable housing, on Tuesday unveiled the River Turn Apartments, Avesta’s first community in the Mount Washington Valley region of New Hampshire.
The first of four planned buildings, River Turn features 40 one- and two-bedroom apartments.
The three-story building has been Passive House-certified, meaning it has passed a rigorous design standard that maximizes energy efficiency, reduces the carbon footprint, and improves air quality and resident comfort.
Amenities include on-site laundry and parking, a community room, and a raised-bed community garden.
Like Maine, the Granite State is facing a shortage of housing, including affordable housing. To meet the current demand, it’s estimated that the New Hampshire will need 60,000 additional homes by 2030.
When all phases are complete, River Turn will consist of more than 150 homes, providing the Conway community with much-needed affordable apartments for low-income individuals and families.
“Avesta has a long history of helping to provide affordable housing in New Hampshire dating to the early 1980s,” said Rebecca Hatfield, Avesta’s president and CEO.
“With the addition of River Turn, we now have nine properties with a combined total of more than 300 affordable homes in the state. We will continue to build on our 40-year history of working in New Hampshire and our strong relationships with key partners to help ensure that everyone in the Granite State has a safe, quality, affordable place to call home,” Hatfield added.

Located at 36 Council Road, Conway, River Turn was developed by Avesta Housing, designed by Lassel Architects of South Berwick, Maine, and built by Hutter Construction Corp. of New Ipswich, N.H. More than 30 local subcontractors and suppliers contributed to the development.
Juana Matias, regional administrator for HUD New England, was a featured speaker.
