Backyard Farms, the tomato grower in Madison, this morning said it would begin construction on its second greenhouse this fall.
To staff the new 18-acre greenhouse, the company, which is the largest greenhouse grower of tomatoes in New England, will add 75 employees to its 100-person staff next spring. The company’s expansion plans were approved last November by the Maine Department of Environmental Protection. At the time, the company’s plans included five new greenhouses.
The new greenhouse, in combination with the 24-acre facility that opened last year, will result in nearly 2 million sq. ft. of greenhouse growing space.
