Georgetown University professor Mila Kofman has been nominated to lead the state’s insurance regulatory agency.
On Friday, Gov. John Baldacci announced the nomination of Kofman, who currently works as associate research professor at the Georgetown University Health Institute in Washington, D.C., as superintendent of the Maine Bureau of Insurance, according to a press release. The bureau, which is part of the Department of Professional and Financial Regulation, is responsible for overseeing more than 1,100 insurance companies and nearly 60,000 licensed insurance agents.
If confirmed by the Legislature, Kofman would serve as superintendent of insurance until April 2009, the expiration of the five-year term of former Superintendent Alessandro A. Iuppa, according to the release. Iuppa resigned in January 2007, according to Insurance Journal.
