Bangor-based Haley Ward expands Florida team and services with acquisition

Haley Ward Inc. expanded its Florida footprint with the acquisition of Conceptual Design Group Inc., a landscape architecture and planning firm led by Jeffrey W. Smith.

The acquisition, which closed June 11, expands the Bangor-based firm’s offerings in the Southeast with the addition of Smith’s landscape architecture services.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Haley Ward is an employee-owned engineering, environmental, surveying, planning and architecture consulting firm. It is based in One Merchants Plaza in Bangor.

In Florida, it has locations in Fort Myers, Stuart, Port St. Lucie and Melbourne.

Landscape architecture expansion

Conceptual Design Group’s founder has practiced planning and landscape architecture in south Florida since 1994 and founded the Stuart, Fla.-based firm in 2000. Smith has worked on large-scale mixed-use developments for commercial, residential, institutional, recreational, industrial and nonprofit projects.

The firm’s expertise includes master planning, mixed-use and residential site planning, rezoning and conditional use applications, government liaison work, sustainable landscape planting design, water-efficient irrigation systems, hardscape detailing, construction observation and landscape architectural specifications.

The acquisition aligns with Haley Ward’s growth in Florida and across the Southeast region, where the firm has been expanding both geographically and in the range of services it provides.

Smith’s decades of experience and reputation in landscape architecture complement Haley Ward’s multidisciplinary approach and enhance the services it can provide, said Roderick Kennedy, the firm’s Southeast regional operations director.

In recent years. the firm’s acquisitions have included Brookfield, Conn.-based civil engineering, surveying and environmental consultant CCA LLC; Glastonbury, Conn.-based Lenard Engineering Inc.; Port St. Lucie and Hobe Sound, Fla.-based engineering firm MilCor Group Inc.; Port St. Lucie and Melbourne, Fla., civil engineering, surveying, planning, and environmental consulting firm EDC Inc.; Portsmouth, N.H.-based Ambit Engineering Inc.;  the geo-environmental division of S.W. Cole Engineering; and Leominster and Chelmsford, Mass.-based surveying and civil engineering company Whitman & Bingham Associates LLC.

Earlier this year, the firm sold its building information modeling division.

With 136 employees in Maine and 300 overall in Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Connecticut and Florida, Haley Ward ranks No. 9 among the state’s largest engineering firms in the 2026 Mainebiz Book of Lists.
