The building, which dates to 1915, is getting new emergency and safety features as well as other needed upgrades.
Bangor City Hall is undergoing a $10 million revamp that is expected to be completed in 2025, six years after voters approved a $6 million bond for the renovations. The building dates to 1915.
Westbrook-based Benchmark Construction is leading the work, which includes $8.9 million for emergency and safety features, such as an elevator compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act and a new ventilation system.
In 2024, a second project started that entails masonry work and the installation of a new generator.
Both Benchmark projects are being overseen by the city’s engineering division.
During the work, while City Hall is closed to the public, municipal operations are being conducted in the Penquis building, at 262 Harlow St.
Benchmark has also undertaken municipal projects for police departments in York and Old Orchard Beach as well as Old Orchard Beach’s Libby Memorial Library and the Kennebunk Ice Rink.
