Bangor native Troy Trejo, a health care industry veteran who previously worked for MaineHealth, will lead Encompass Health Rehabilitation of Bangor as the institution’s first CEO, the company announced.
The 50-bed inpatient facility, now under construction at 1017 Union St., is expected to open to patients in October.
Trejo, with more than 19 years of experience in health care, joined MaineHealth in February 2018 and has served as vice president of strategy for the past three years.
“Troy is an experienced health care executive who knows this community and understands the post-acute healthcare needs,” said Mat Gooch, president of Encompass Health’s Northeast region.
“He brings tremendous knowledge of overseeing complex hospital operations, and he also understands the importance of keeping patients’ needs as our top priority. The hospital will have a strong impact in the Bangor region under his leadership.”
About the company
Birmingham, Ala.-based Encompass Health (NYSE: EHC) is the nation’s largest owner and operator of inpatient rehabilitation hospitals, with 176 facilities in 39 states and Puerto Rico. As of Thursday’s close on Wall Street, shares had a market value of $9.72 billion.
Encompass Health Bangor will be the company’s first wholly owned hospital in Maine. It will be located on a 17.45-acre land parcel Encompass purchased last year in a $1.565 million deal brokered by John Bonadio of Maine Commercial Realty. At the time, he estimated the cost of the 79,000-square-foot hospital facility at $61 million.
The company’s Portland site, New England Rehabilitation Hospital of Portland, is a longstanding joint venture with MaineHealth.
Trejo earned a master’s degree in management from Harvard University Extension School in Cambridge, Mass., and a bachelor’s in health sciences and policy from Brandeis University in Waltham, Mass.
Outside of work, Trejo serves on the board of the Portland Museum of Art and as an advisory committee member for Northeastern University’s Roux Institute Healthcare Founder Residency.
“I am honored to lead the opening of Encompass Health’s hospital in Bangor and to serve as its first CEO,” Trejo said. “There is a great need for inpatient rehabilitation services here, and I look forward to building a patient-centered hospital that provides state-of-the-art care close to home.”
