Bangor receives $8M for public transportation, including charging stations for electric buses

The city of Bangor has been awarded nearly $8 million to rehabilitate its bus depot to support the charging of electric buses.

The grant was awarded through the U.S. Department of Transportation’s “low-no” emission vehicle grant program.

According to a release, the program allows funding to be available to buy or lease U.S.-built low- or no-emission vehicles, including buses and vans. It also supports facility and station upgrades to accommodate low- or no-emission vehicles and supports equipment like battery electric charging.

The funding for this grant was provided by the bipartisan infrastructure law, in which U.S. Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, negotiated the infrastructure package with nine other senators.

“Public transit is indispensable to many Americans who use it to get to work, school, medical appointments, and grocery stores,” Collins said in a news release. “This funding will help Bangor improve the reliability of their public transportation system. As a key negotiator of the bipartisan infrastructure package, I am delighted that this law is making significant investments that will help expand affordable, reliable, and environmentally friendly transportation options for our communities.”
