Maine’s second-largest bank needs bigger headquarters after seeing 16 straight years of earnings growth. Its plans for a new waterfront campus reflect a strong focus on keeping employees happy by including a gym, basement café, bike storage and a walking path down to the riverbank.

1852: Founded by Elijah Hamlin and 23 others

1913: New headquarters opened at 3 State St. two years after the Great Fire that destroyed hundreds of commercial and residential buildings
