Waldo County Healthcare’s incorporators on Monday approved a change in its bylaws to allow the Belfast hospital to join MaineHealth, the corporate parent of Maine Medical Center and other Maine hospitals.
Waldo County Healthcare officials said the benefits of the affiliation will include savings of more than $1 million in annual operating costs, discounts on major equipment and access to capital at lower rates, the Bangor Daily News reported.
The Belfast hospital, which has been independent for a century, had reached a financial crisis with growing numbers of uninsured and a growing elderly population, the paper reported.
