Shenna Bellows, the former head of the American Civil Liberties Union of Maine, has filed paperwork to run for the U.S. Senate seat now occupied by Republican Susan Collins.
Bellows announced on Twitter Tuesday that she filed papers and plans to hold official campaign launch events on Oct. 23.

The Portland Press Herald reported that Bellows is the only candidate to announce a run against Collins so far. It is the first time she has run for elective office, but her work as the leader of Maine’s ACLU involved frequent negotiations between Republicans and Democrats at the State House.
