🔒Biddeford art exhibition aims to cast ocean research in new light

An exhibition in Biddeford next month will reimagine scientific observations of Maine’s coast as immersive works of art. “Sensing the Coast: An Art-Science Collaboration,” will be on view from July 10-30 in Building 13 of the Pepperell Mill Campus. The exhibition is presented by Art of Biddeford, a program of Heart of Biddeford. Delilah Poupore, executive director of Heart of Biddeford, told Mainebiz the idea began as an educational opportunity for interdisciplinary learning between art and science students but evolved into an exhibition that “brings the science to the community through art.” Drawing on scientific data collected from locations across the Maine coast, the exhibition invites visitors to explore coastal environments through sound, sight, taste and touch. Contemporary artworks, drone photography and community-based projects offer new ways to engage with the landscapes and waterways that shape life in Maine. Visitors will encounter artwork inspired by ocean temperatures, wind patterns, estuary conditions and coastal observation, along with drone photography documenting Biddeford’s changing shoreline. The exhibition includes contributions from students and faculty at the University of Maine and the University of New England, as well as from community partners in Biddeford. “Sensing the Coast creates an opportunity for people to experience science in a way that is engaging, accessible and rooted in this place,” said Larry Weyand, Art of Biddeford's program director. “Whether you're interested in art, science, Maine's coastline, or simply community connection, there's something here that invites curiosity and conversation.” Organizers said the exhibition is made possible by space provided at Pepperell Mill Campus by developer Todd Finard of Core Finard. The Boston-based company teamed with Portland real estate firm CORE last year to buy 464,000 square feet at the renovated former mill.

The exhibition, free and open to the public, will open with an evening reception on Friday, July 10, from 5 to 8 p.m., featuring beverages and refreshments from Nibblesford and short presentations at a storytelling “Collider” by participating artists and scientists from 7 to 8 p.m. Additional gallery tours will be offered during the July art walk on Friday, July 17, as well as Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from noon to 4 p.m. from July 11–30.
