The Harold Alfond Foundation has awarded $3.1 million to Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences to build a 32-bed student and visiting scientist residence on its East Boothbay Campus. An anonymous donor matched the award. The project is expected to break ground this April.
“We are striving for a New Zero Energy building,” Graham Shimmield, the lab’s executive director, said in a statement. The lab has focused on energy efficiency since opening in its new location in December 2012.
The new 15,000-square-foot dorm will overlook the Damariscotta River and be a short walk from the main laboratory building. Two wings of the dorm will have three studio apartments to accommodate visiting scientists and other guests as well as one two-bedroom apartment.
Scott Simons Architects of Portland designed the building, and the Portland office of Consigli Construction Company Inc. is providing construction management services.
