BIW competitor courts workers

Bath Iron Works’ chief competitor is targeting the shipyard’s workforce to attract qualified shipbuilders to its Gulf Coast shipyard.

Los Angeles, Calif.-based Northrop Grumman Corp. sent a glossy mailing to Bath area residents seeking “skilled men and women in all areas of shipbuilding” to work at its yard in Pascagoula, Miss., offering yearly earnings of up to $43,675 and up to $10,000 for relocation costs, The Times Record in Brunswick reported.

Jay Korman, senior Navy analyst for Avascent Group, a Washington, D.C.-based consulting firm, told the paper that a limited talent pool often leads shipyards to try to entice workers from other yards.
