Bath Iron Works has received a $17 million contract addition for work on the new DDG 1000 class of destroyers, according to U.S. Rep. Chellie Pingree, a member of the House Armed Services Committee. The shipyard also received additional funding for combat ship design and support.
The $17 million award is a modification to a previous contract to provide additional services related to the design, construction and maintenance of the DDG 1000 destroyers. BIW is currently building three DDG 1000 ships. The shipyard also received a $12.5 million modification to a previously award contract for the littoral combat ship for design services and technical support, as well as another $7 million for what’s known as post-shakedown work for LCS 2, the USS Independence, according to a press release from U.S. Sen. Susan Collins, a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee and the Defense Appropriations Subcommittee. Post-shakedown work aims to resolve any problems that arose during a ship’s trials and delivery.
Last November, the shipyard won a $14 million contract modification for logistic support for the destroyers, following a $2 billion contract to build the second and third ships in the class. The first ship is scheduled to be delivered to the Navy in 2013.
