Bath Iron Works has begun building the last of the Arleigh Burke destroyers, the class that’s been the yard’s mainstay since the early 1990s.
BIW started work on the 62nd and final ship in the Arleigh Burke class on Sept. 7, Jim DeMartini, BIW spokesperson, told Mainebiz this morning. The $1.2 billion ship is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2011, he said.
BIW will start working on the next-generation DDG-1000 destroyers sometime next year, DeMartini said.
