The work force at Bath defense contractor Bath Iron Works will be cut by 88 in the next two weeks as the shipyard continues work on the Navy’s newest Zumwalt-class destroyers.
Shipyard spokesman Jim DeMartini told The Associated Press that the cuts come to meet the current demand for work from the Navy.
Late last week, the shipyard was awarded a modification of a $26 million contract for design work on the Zumwalt — or DDG-1000 — destroyers, bringing the value of that contract to nearly $39 million.
DeMartini told the AP that the cuts were made in two announcements to employees and will take place through Oct. 5.
