BIW to lay off 40 shipyard workers

Bath Iron Works plans to lay off 40 workers on Sept. 6, reflecting a decrease in their workload.

The Bangor Daily News reported the company will cut 15 pipe coverer and 25 insulator jobs. BIW spokesman Jim DeMartini said specific employees will be notified next week.

DeMartini said the company, which recently won contracts worth $2.84 billion to build four DDG 51 destroyers, has added 370 workers since the beginning of the year and recalled another 125 that were previously laid off.
