BIW to lay off 90; loses CG contract

Bath Iron Works plans to lay off 90 production workers next month due to a drop in workload.

BIW spokesman Jim DeMartini confirmed late Friday that the shipyard, which employs 5,900 people, will lay off 40 electricians, 35 technicians and 15 welders, the Associated Press reported. The layoffs will take effect Oct. 10.

In related news, BIW learned Friday it has been passed over for a U.S. Coast Guard contract worth up to $1.5 billion to design and build 34 patrol boats, according to the AP. Lockport, La.-based Bollinger Shipyards won that contract. BIW had been a finalist in the bidding process.
