Roughly half the members of the Bath Iron Works chapter of International Association of Machinists, the largest union at the shipyard, have signed a petition in support of local leadership and to scrap a trusteeship imposed by the parent union.
A petition bearing the signatures of 1,677 Local S6 members was mailed last week to the international union, which ousted Local S6’s local leadership in March over allegations of shoddy accounting, pornography on computers and problems with grievances, according to the Associated Press.
A union committee last month decided to keep the Local S6 in trusteeship, but local union members have the right to appeal to seek reinstatement of local leaders, the AP said. Three union officers, including Local S6 President Mike Keenan, remain suspended.
