“Product diversification is more challenging than ever because the consumer has never been more varied,” says Jenn Lever, president of the Lewiston-based brewer.
After rolling out a slate of new beers in 2025 including its first summer ale in several years, Baxter Brewing is gearing up for more launches in coming months.
“Product diversification is more challenging than ever because the consumer has never been more varied,” says Jenn Lever, president of the Lewiston-based brewer.
“Traditional beer drinkers, non-alcoholic consumers and those exploring adjacent categories are often the same person at different moments,” she notes. “The challenge isn’t choosing a single path but understanding how and why those choices shift and how retailers will manage their shelves differently in the changing landscape.”
Baxter, which employs 21 in its brewery and 25 in its pub, is ranked Maine’s fourth-largest brewery in the 2026 Mainebiz Book of Lists.
More broadly, Lever says that today’s biggest challenge for Maine craft brewers is operating in a market where costs continue to rise as consumer spending tightens.
“Independent breweries don’t have the economies of scale that domestic brands can leverage, which makes decision-making about all aspects of the business more critical than ever,” she says.
