Southern Maine seafood processor and distributor Bristol Seafood and its partners donated $10,000 to the University of New England’s Center for Excellence in the Marine Sciences.
Barry Costa-Pierce, director of the UNE center, said in a prepared statement that the funds will be instrumental to continuing the school’s research, which aims to expand the marine economy in Maine and globally.
Bristol President and CEO Peter Handy said he was pleased to help the centers students in the areas of ocean studies, marine conservation and restoration, marine entrepreneurship and sustainable aquaculture and fisheries.
Last year Mainebiz wrote about the center’s research on aquaponics, which uses live fish waste to fertilize produce as part of its Edible Campus Initiative.
