Brooklin Boat Yard has been awarded $1.5 million in funding through the Maine Technology Institute to build a new service and technology building.
With the MTI support, Brooklin Boat Yard will build a 7,520-square-foot facility that will enable the company to take on additional new build, restoration and service projects and to hire 10 additional employees.
Brooklin Boat Yard houses a design division, new construction shops and a full-service division that provides restoration, maintenance and storage services. The boatyard was founded in 1960 by Joel White and is now employee-owned.
Brooklin Boat Yard is in Brooklin, on the Blue Hill Peninsula.
New technologies
The new building will include a clean space for composite projects, a machine shop and a 3D printing workshop, enabling the team to apply innovative composite techniques and develop new technologies.
With this additional workspace, Brooklin Boat Yard will be able to increase purchasing from Maine suppliers and vendors, and continue to promote Maine as a leader in craftsmanship, boatbuilding and marine innovation.
Gov. Janet Mills announced the award from MTI’s Maine Technology Asset Fund earlier this month. MTI awarded a total of $25 million to 23 Maine businesses and research organizations to drive growth in Maine’s innovation economy.
MTI received more than 113 applications. The funding is being provided to private businesses in the form of interest-free loans with a matching funds requirement, with the potential for partial loan forgiveness based on financial performance.
