Brothel owner loses appeal

A former Kittery lawyer and town councilor convicted of operating a brothel and conspiring to launder millions lost his appeal this week.

The First U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals said Gary Reiner should serve his five-year prison sentence and be held accountable for $3.9 million funneled from the Danish Health Club to bank accounts from 2001 to 2004, according to the Associated Press. Reiner was convicted in September 2005 by a U.S. District Court in Portland.

The Danish Health Club opened in 1984 and operated until 2002, when it was raided by the FBI, the AP reported.
