This year’s Build Maine conference June 2 to 3, in downtown Skowhegan, will feature a day and a half of programming, including keynote speakers, walking tours, workshops — even an option for a guided kayak tour of the Kennebec River.
One of the workshops, “Placemaking through Human-scale Planning,” will feature Brett Richardson, Freeport development director; Matt Drost, transportation planner at the Maine Department of Transportation; and Dan Bacon, director of development for M&R Holdings.
M&R Holdings is the developer behind Scarborough’s Downs project as well as a 51-unit apartment building that’s just broken ground in Freeport.
The trio will discuss the benefits of creating a strategic village plan that integrates multimodal transportation upgrades with infill development and dedicated funding for capital improvements.
“Re-regulating for Quality Housing Abundance” will feature Eric Kronberg, an architect and urban designer based in Atlanta. Kronberg’s presentation will cover how to solve problems that are holding back communities from being socially vibrant and economically productive.
Kronberg will discuss best practices that cover zoning and subdivision ordinances, building codes and financing.
Workshops will be held at the Newspaper Building, at 185 Water St., and at the Spinning Mill, at 7 Island Ave.

Skowhegan-based Build Maine works to bring together builders, funders, elected officials, engineers, lawyers, planners, finance institutions and rule-makers to share best practices and aspirations for moving Maine forward within the political and economic climates of today.
The organization advocates for housing policy at the state level and hosts workshops and events throughout the year, culminating in its annual Build Maine Conference.
This year’s conference is co-hosted by the Maine Downtown Center, the Maine Municipal Association and the Maine Real Estate & Development Association.
