Yarmouth-based architect William Harke and New York-based Labella Associates, working with Thornton’s facilities director, Matthew Cook, designed the academy’s newly built 49,000-square-foot Miles Field House, completed just in time for the new school year.
Westbrook-based Benchmark Construction was the general contractor.
“We aimed for local contractors as much as possible,” Thornton’s director of development and alumni relations Jennifer Day told Mainebiz. In fact, some of the electricians working on the project were Thornton graduates.
The multipurpose facility boasts a center basketball court — with a $160,000 removable floor, which can be stored when not in use, to protect the surface.
There are two additional full courts, lined for volleyball, basketball and tennis, and a flexible “curtain” can descend from the ceiling to wall off the courts so that three events can be hosted concurrently. There’s seating capacity for 2,700.
The new field house also has a three-lane, 55-meter sprint track, along with a 200-meter track up on the mezzanine level.
Construction news from around the state
Scarborough’s M&R Development, and Falmouth-based Graiver Homes, are developing a 14-building, 172-unit apartment and condominium complex on 8.9 acres on Tandberg Trail in Windham. Risbara Bros. Construction Co. Inc., based in Scarborough, is the project’s contractor. Portland’s Invivid Architecture, is the designer. Belgrade-based Hammond Lumber will supply construction panels.
Wright-Ryan Construction, based in Portland, completed two new buildings for Maine Audubon at Gilsland Farm in Falmouth as part of a $5.2 million expansion. The largest of the two structures is the 4,560-square-foot Ann and Jim Hancock Native Plants Education Center. A 2,330-square-foot Annex houses equipment and gear for statewide conservation and sanctuary stewardship work. The all-wood buildings were designed by Portland-based Kaplan Thompson Architects.
Portland-based Developers Collaborative has completed a 54-unit affordable senior housing project, Equality Commons, at 25 Casco St. in downtown Portland. Falmouth-based Penobscot General Contractors is the builder. Ryan Senatore Architecture, headquartered in Portland, is the designer.
PC Construction, which is headquartered in South Burlington, Vt., and has a Portland office, has underway a 100,000-square-foot corporate office building for Martin’s Point Health Care. Portland-based SMRT Architects & Engineers designed the building, while Sebago Technics of South Portland handled engineering-related site work. The new building, perched above Casco Bay near the Portland-Falmouth line, will consolidate administrative functions currently spread over multiple locations when completed in summer 2027.
