Major projects on Portland’s East End have taken shape and are already visually transforming the neighborhood, while a residential development is underway on the other side of Back Cove. Two projects are making progress in Falmouth.
Portland’s East End has wasted no time in its transformation. It’s been said that when Shipyard Brewing Co. moved into a vacant factory building on India Street in 1994, the company filled a fleet of Dumpsters. In these cases, it’s ground-up construction.
Now, Allied-Cook Construction is showing momentum on a project that will house the headquarters of animal life sciences company Covetrus and a “brewtel” hotel being developed by Shipyard Brewing. Covetrus Inc. (Nasdaq: CVET), which has 5,500 employees globally, is currently housed at 7 Custom House St., a few blocks away.

Across Fore Street, Consigli Construction has the steel up on the future Sun Life Insurance building. Windows are being installed on the Portland Harbor (Thames Street) side of the building. When the 77,000-square-foot building opens by mid-2022, it will house 500 employees and have capacity for 700 employees. Sun Life’s site will include the subsidiary FullscopeRMS and its Disability RMS business. The site will also include retail and a boutique hotel.
Falmouth projects moving forward

Two buildings that will bookend the Falmouth Shopping Center are well underway. Both are four-story buildings, both are being built by the Penobscot Cos. and both are being financed by Machias Savings Bank.
The building at the south end of the shopping center is farthest along, with outer walls coming together. It will house a Chase Bank branch on the ground floor, as well as other retail and offices. The building on the north end of the shopping center is still in the site-work phase.
Condos taking flight over Back Cove
Elsewhere in Portland, PM Construction is managing work on “218 Washington,” which will have 45 luxury condos at 218 Washington St. The condos, which are being built on a steep hill, will have an unobstructed view of the Back Cove. The developer is Hatcher Group. Sales are being handled by Keller Williams. Completion is expected by summer 2022.
