If the weather cooperates, Maine’s wild blueberry growers are expected to produce 80 million to 100 million pounds this season, close to the most recent record-breaking harvest in 2000 of 111 million pounds.
The wet fall and good snow cover over the winter protected blueberry barrens from damage, David Yarborough, professor of horticulture at the University of Maine Cooperative Extension, told the Ellsworth American.
Blueberry production is a $200 million business in Maine, the paper reported.
