Camden National Bank said Thursday it is launching a program to provide funding for the homeless.
Hope@Home, as the program is called, will be tied to home mortgages. For each home mortgage the bank writes, it will contribute $100 toward a homeless shelter in that community.
The program will help fund about 50 service organizations that provide food, shelter, life skills and, the bank added, hope. For more on the program: HopeAtHomeMaine.com
There are an estimated 7,500 homeless people in Maine, the bank said. Homelessness increased by 26% statewide in 2013. As many as 250 people stay in homeless shelters for six months or more.
“Homelessness is a growing issue in our state, and we believe it is time to help our neighbors in need,” Greg Dufour, the bank’s president, said in a prepared statement.
Camden National, which is based in Camden, has 44 offices in Maine and 480 employees.
