With the lowest bid of $64.9 million, Gorham-based Great Falls Construction beat two competitors to win the contract to build a new middle school in Cape Elizabeth and make critical repairs to the Pond Cove Elementary School.
In an announcement emailed to residents Tuesday evening, the town said the winning bid came in at more than $8 million under budget.
The other bidders were Scarborough-based Landry/French Construction, which submitted a bid of just below $65.2 million; and South Burlington, Vt.-based PC Construction, which bid close to $67.5 million.
“This major milestone is the direct result of extensive hard work and appreciated community support,” the town said in its announcement.
Construction on the new Cape Elizabeth Middle School is slated for completion by August 2028, with pre-construction site work already underway. Harriman, an Auburn-based architecture firm, is also involved in the project.
Joseph Smith, head of business development and marketing at Great Falls Construction, said the Cape Elizabeth school project is the firm's largest single contract to date. However, a phased project in Berwick will exceed the amount once completed, he noted.

Elsewhere in southern Maine, Great Falls has schools under construction in Cumberland, Gorham and Biddeford.
In the higher education space, Great Falls is building a $15 million visual arts center at the University of Southern Maine in Gorham.
