A chowder house that has greeted visitors to downtown Camden for the past 38 years has shut its doors.
Cappy’s Chowder House, which is located at 1 Main St. in the coastal town, officially closed on Sunday and will reopen as a Shipyard’s Sea Dog pub and eatery in June, according to its website.
The eatery was owned and operated for 30 years by Johanna Tutone before it was sold to Matthew Orne, who purchased the property in 2012, at about the same time the restaurateur purchased the adjacent Village Restaurant, according to the Bangor Daily News.
Cappy’s expanded into the Village Restaurant space in 2013 following Orne’s purchase.
“They made a good breakfast. The atmosphere was good. This was the spot where local crowds went,” Camden Select Board Chair John French Jr. told the BDN about the long-time Camden eatery.
