Rumford lawyer Seth Carey has stepped down as leader of a referendum campaign to put a casino in Oxford County, citing legal matters that could distract voters from the initiative.
Carey also resigned as president of Evergreen Mountain Enterprises, the limited liability corporation he founded to own and operate the casino if it were approved by voters in November, the Sun Journal in Lewiston reported. Carey currently is under review by the Grievance Commission of the Board of Overseers of the Bar for complaints filed by two local attorneys and a judge that he behaved unethically and violated the Maine Bar Association’s Code of Professional Responsibility, the paper reported.
Carey also was charged last month with misdemeanor assault for touching a woman in an offensive manner, the Sun Journal reported.
