Backers of the casino proposal in Oxford County that voters will decide on in today’s election have outspent their rivals by 5 to 1.
According to political action committee spending reports, Maine Taxpayers Taking Charge, proponents of ballot Question 1, have spent more than $3.1 million trying to influence voters to support the four-season resort casino, reported the Portland Press Herald. By comparison, opponents of the measure have spent $600,000.
Most of the money for the Taking Charge campaign came from Black Bear Entertainment, a group of investors who want to build a western Maine casino as a form of economic development. Opponents — including Leon Gorman, chair of the board of L.L.Bean, and operators of the Bangor-based Hollywood Slots racino — argue the casino would erode quality of life and create a gaming monopoly in the state.
