Casino developer makes promises

Dean Harrold, head of the Las Vegas company that wants to build a four-season resort casino in Oxford, has pledged not to lower the gambling age or hold a monopoly on casino operations if voters approve the casino Nov. 4.

Harrold yesterday signed a written pledge in front of members of the media that vowed the company would not allow people under 21 to gamble or back a 10-year moratorium on other casino development in the state, according to Portland news channel WCSH 6. He also said he would not sit on any boards or committees that will benefit directly from gambling revenue. Question two’s referendum is currently written to include these controversial provisions, but Harrold and Pat LaMarche, spokesperson for the “Yes on 2 for Maine” campaign, said these provisions would be changed by the Legislature to reflect current Maine gaming law if voters approve it.

But Dennis Bailey, spokesman for CasinosNO!, urged voters to be cautious about approving a measure that needs changing, according to WCSH 6.

Why weren’t these promises reflected in the proposed legislation?

Let’s assume the referendum passes, the gambling age is lowered and the Oxford folks keep their promises, for a while. What happens when competition dictates they allow 19-21 year old gamblers?

I’m not ant-casino. I am opposed to opening the floodgates based on promises.
