Casino upheld in vote recount

Opponents of a planned casino in Oxford County have conceded defeat in the recount of the statewide referendum.

CasinosNo! and Oxford Hills No on 1 ended the process after a recount of about 25% of the votes showed no major changes from the original margin of 4,601 votes, CasinosNo! spokesman Dennis Bailey told the Portland Press Herald. About 132,000 ballots were recounted and resulted in an additional 122 votes being counted in favor of Black Bear Entertainment's plan for the $165 million casino resort in Oxford, according to a press release from the secretary of state's office. Bailey told the paper the group is still considering a legal challenge, saying the law's provision that only allows a single company to operate a casino is unconstitutional.

Black Bear Entertainment in November announced its planned location for the casino, a 100-acre parcel of former farmland on Route 26.
