Central Maine Healthcare Corp. has implemented a hiring and wage freeze for its 3,000-plus work force, citing empty beds and missing Medicaid reimbursements from the state.
The Sun Journal reported that Peter Chalke, Central Maine Healthcare’s president and CEO, issued a prepared statement saying the company’s hospitals cared for fewer patients in the first half of 2010 compared with the same time period in 2009. Chalke also said the state has delayed $50 million in bill payments for Medicaid patients. The organization, the parent company of hospitals in Lewiston, Rumford and Bridgton, will reduce differential pay for after-hours workers and has issued a two-month suspension of its earned-time program, according to the paper.
Laird Covey, president of Central Maine Medical Center, told the paper hospital staff is redesigning processes to boost efficiency and improve quality.
